Throwback Thursday: Brandy’s Never Say Never Album

I have officially dubbed every Thursday a “Throwback Thursday”. This is where I will reminisce on media, news, music, fashion and other stuff from growing up.

brandy never say never

Brraaaandddyy! Throughout my preteen and early teenage years Brandy was it for me. She was a beautiful chocolate sista that came from a wholesome family [this was way before her pregnancy and marriage scandal, the Ray J and Kim Kardashian's sex tape and For the Love of Ray J reality show] that could sing, had her own doll and starred in a successful sitcom.[Mo to the, E to the]

Before Alicia Keys and her cornrows, Brandy held down braid extensions. Every two months, from 7th to 11th grade, my mother would shell out $100+ so I could get my hair done like Brandy’s. Oh, how I loved her! She was like the older sister I wanted to emulate.

While I was a fan since “I Wanna Be Down”, it was Brandy’s sophomore Never Say Never album that had me. Her look matured and so did her sound. I remember buying the CD the summer of 9th grade and playing it nonstop. I still consider it a classic.

The video premiere of “The Boy is Mine” was monumental for teenage girls in 1998. To have Brandy and Monica – the two “rivaling” Princesses of R&B – singing a duet was HUGE. I remember my friends and I choosing sides and arguing about which one of them was prettier, had the best voice and could whoop who in a fight. HAHAHA!

My absolute favorite song on the album. I think I was crushing on a boy at the time, who I swore was meant to be mine. The lyrics touched my high school heart.
